21-Year-Old Jazz Pianist and San Francisco-Native Sam Reider to Return to Bay Area in August for Week of Performances.

In August, Sam Reider and The Lost Boys will make multiple appearances in the Bay Area including a show at folk-venue Don Quixote’s in Santa Cruz (8/15), a double-bill with hip-hop sensation 40Love at Coda in SF (8/19), a joint workshop and performance at the Jazzschool in Berkeley (8/22), and a special outdoor concert at the SF Giant’s Stadium (8/13).

The music is an eclectic mix of original material that bridges the boundaries between Jazz, Folk, and Pop styles. Reider brings his talents for composition and lyricism together with an amazing band that includes voice, piano, bass, drums, guitar, accordion, and a horn section. His band mates are also young but are of the highest caliber of musicianship, and have performed internationally alongside artists ranging from Hank Jones to Beyonce.

Reider, who now adds accordion and vocals to his arsenal, is also a senior at Columbia University in New York City. Throughout high school in San Francisco, Reider studied at the Jazzschool in Berkeley and performed frequently with the SFJazz All-Star High School Big Band.

Now, Reider is garnering much attention in the national jazz scene. In 2008, Reider was featured on Marian McPartland’s award-winning radio show, “Piano Jazz,” on NPR, which has hosted every major jazz artist from Ray Charles to Norah Jones.

Also in 2008, Reider’s piano trio made its first tour of the west coast and sold-out the recently opened Yoshi’s in San Francisco. Since then he has played at major venues and festivals all over country, returning again last year to play at Yoshi’s Oakland and at the Fillmore Jazz Festival.

His new project, Sam Reider and the Lost Boys, was founded only last September but since then has met with critical success, performing frequently in New York City and recording a short EP.

12.25.08 | Sam Reider recently on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on NPR
I first met Marian at the end of my senior year in high school. About a year later I went into the studio in New York and recorded the show. That day I woke up early and went for a run; it was springtime finally and riverside park was in bloom. I took the subway downtown and walked around the block a few times since I was early. I entered the studio just as Marian was getting there. I was really nervous but everyone present was really friendly and just like she seems over the radio, Marian exuded a sort of calm. The recording was over before I knew it and six months later it finally aired.
